It is not confirmed yet whether a new extremist sect has emerged in Nigeria however the Nigerian police indicated it arrested 22 alleged members of a religious movement in Abia state.

According to the police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna,  they were arrested during Operation Puff Adder conducted by men of police commissioner’s Crack Squad

The leaders of the sect recruit young people in schools and universities. The new recruits are then initiated by elders of the sect.

Items recovered include four red candles, 24 white candles, two native kola nuts, bitter kola nuts, a half-cut calabash, a tam-tam, and a 10-litre container containing a blood-like liquid.

“During the operation, we found six empty cartridges and a homemade rifle. Through these arrested people, we will be able to get their hands on their comrades and leaders on the run, “said a statement from the police.

For observers, this possible new extremist sect presents itself as another case of insecurity in a wounded Nigeria beset by Boko Haram and inter-communal violence.

“Then, early in the morning while combing the scene, six expended cartridges and a damaged locally-made short gun were recovered.

“The suspects are giving a lead that would aid in the arrest of their fleeing members,” Ogbonna concluded.
