One Million Persons Starving In Kano As A Result Of COVID-19

A report by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) says that more than one million people in Kano State, Nigeria, are suffering from malnutrition as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The global body made the announcement on Monday as it launched its food and cash subsidy program for low-income people living in urban areas of the state.

It said from the onset of the pandemic to this October, the number of malnourished people in the state had increased from 568,000 to 1.5 million.

WFP said the initiative will be extended to Lagos, the country’s commercial centre, and Abuja, the federal capital territory. It added that the biting consequences of the pandemic compelled it to, for the first time, expand its programme in Nigeria to reach people in towns and cities, where it noted that; “millions of people are threatened with hunger and malnutrition due to the socio-economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
