Women Protest Akwa Ibom Assembly Leadership Crisis

Women in Akwa Ibom State earlier today  stormed the premises of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in protest.

The women were led by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Women Affairs all dressed in black outfits, holding placards with various inscriptions.

They expressed disapproval over the recent crisis rocking the Assembly.

They accused the police of complicity and called for the removal of the Commissioner of Police in the state.

Speaker of the Akwa Ibom Assembly, Onofiok Luke, later came out and addressed the women.

The protest by Akwa Ibom women come a week after the premises of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly was sealed off by the police.

Lawmakers and staff of the Assembly were on Wednesday, November 21, denied access into the complex as it was cordoned off by armed police personnel.

There was also a heavy security presence at all the entrances leading into the complex.

The Senate in reaction to the situation had earlier ordered an investigation into the sealing of Akwa Ibom House of Assembly by security operatives.

The Police later on Friday, November 23 ended their siege on the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as all entrances to the complex which were barricaded were opened.

However as reported by Naija News in earlier publications, a fresh crisis broke out in the state assembly complex on Wednesday as armed security operatives once again, took over the assembly complex.

Political thugs also tried invading the complex and cars were reportedly burnt in the process.

The leadership crisis between lawmakers in the state assembly remains unresolved as both factions involved are laying claim to the house leadership.
