Arsenal’s Move For Julian Alvarez Suffers Setback, Monreal Warns Against Tonali Deal

Arsenal’s hopes of landing Atlético Madrid striker, Julian Alvarez, appear to have suffered a major blow, with reports claiming the forward is not interested in a move to the Emirates this summer.

According to Spanish outlet Cadena SER, Arsenal are regarded as the only realistic destination should Alvarez leave Atlético Madrid during the current transfer window. However, the Argentina international is not considering a switch to North London.

The 26-year-old has attracted interest from both Arsenal and FC Barcelona, but Barcelona’s opening offer of £86.4m was reportedly turned down by Atlético. Negotiations between the two Spanish clubs are said to have reached a standstill.

Despite ongoing speculation, Atlético manager Diego Simeone and the club hierarchy remain confident Alvarez will stay in Madrid beyond the summer.

Naija News reports that Alvarez joined Atlético Madrid from Manchester City for £81.5m two years ago and remains a key figure in Simeone’s plans.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has urged the Gunners to think carefully before pursuing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.

Tonali has been linked with several leading European clubs, including Arsenal, but Monreal believes signing the Italian could create a selection dilemma in midfield.

Speaking to Rekatochklart, Monreal said, “If Arsenal buys Tonali, they will get the best midfielder in the world.

“But they signed Zubimendi for a lot of money last year, so it’s difficult.

“To have both Tonali, Zubimendi, and Rice would be a lot, so I can only imagine that they would have to sell either Zubimendi or Declan Rice if they really want Tonali.

“In my opinion, they already have the two best defensive midfielders in the world.”
