Rasmus Højlund Completes Permanent Napoli Switch From Man United

Manchester United have confirmed the permanent departure of striker Rasmus Højlund to Napoli after the Italian club activated the clause tied to their qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The deal, worth £43.2 million including last season’s loan fee, brings an end to Højlund’s three-year spell at Old Trafford following his £72 million arrival from Atalanta in 2023.

The Denmark international spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan with Napoli and impressed enough for Antonio Conte’s side to secure his services on a long-term basis. Højlund scored 16 goals in 44 appearances, helping Napoli lift the Supercoppa Italiana and finish runners-up in Serie A.

His permanent transfer is understood to be worth around £38 million and is expected to help fund Napoli’s move for midfielder Éderson from Atalanta.

Højlund leaves United with 26 goals in 95 appearances across all competitions. Despite flashes of promise, he struggled to consistently justify his hefty transfer fee and was moved down the pecking order after the arrival of Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig last summer.

The 23-year-old rediscovered form in Italy and was reportedly keen to remain in Naples rather than return to Manchester.

Confirming the move, United said in a statement: “Rasmus Hojlund has joined Napoli on a permanent transfer.

“The Denmark international spent last season on loan at the Italian club, scoring 16 times in 44 games across all competitions, and has now permanently joined the Neapolitans.

“The boyhood United fan signed from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 and went on to score 26 goals in 95 appearances.

“He was part of the Reds squad that lifted the Emirates FA Cup in May 2024, having come on as a substitute against Manchester City at Wembley.

“At the start of the 2025/26 season, Hojlund returned to Italy on a season-long loan, helping Napoli to win the Supercoppa Italiana and finish runners-up in Serie A. Everyone at the club would like to wish Rasmus all the very best for the future.”

Højlund’s exit is expected to be one of several departures at Old Trafford this summer as United reshape their squad under manager Michael Carrick.

Veteran midfielder Casemiro, defender Tyrell Malacia and winger Jadon Sancho are all set to leave when their contracts expire. The club are also willing to listen to offers for Manuel Ugarte, while interest is growing in Joshua Zirkzee from Serie A clubs and in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir from Türkiye.

United are also hopeful of securing permanent moves for Marcus Rashford and André Onana following their respective loan spells at Barcelona and Trabzonspor.

Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Éderson is closing in on a move to Old Trafford in a deal reportedly worth an initial £35 million plus performance-related add-ons as United continue their summer rebuild.
