Ibrahima Konaté Exit Liverpool As Contract Talks Collapse
Ibrahima Konaté will leave Liverpool on a free transfer when his contract expires in June this summer after negotiations over a new deal broke down.
The France defender, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35 million, had been in talks with the club since November 2023. Both sides were initially hopeful of reaching an agreement, with Konate saying after the Merseyside derby in April that he was “close to an agreement” and there was a “big chance” he would remain at Anfield next season.
But a gap in valuation and wage demands has stalled progress, and discussions have now stopped completely. Liverpool are preparing for the possibility of losing another senior player for nothing, following the departures of Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah this summer.
The situation mirrors last year’s exit of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid CF shortly before the expiry of his contract after the Spanish side agreed a fee for his early release ahead of the Club World Cup.
Liverpool’s defensive options are beginning to look stretched. Club captain Virgil van Dijk, whose own deal runs out next summer, and Joe Gomez would become the only experienced centre-backs left in the squad.
The club had attempted to strengthen that area after failing to sign Marc Guéhi before last September’s deadline day, with the defender eventually moving to Manchester City in January.
Liverpool remain confident in their younger defensive options despite injury concerns. Jeremy Jacquet arrived this summer in a £60 million deal after making 21 appearances for Rennes last season, though the 20-year-old missed the final four months of the campaign with a shoulder injury.
Teenage defender Giovanni Leoni is also highly rated at Anfield but faces a lengthy recovery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury shortly after his move from Parma last year.
Inside the club, there is a growing feeling that reinforcing other areas of the squad takes priority over committing huge wages to keep Konate. Replacing Salah and coping with the injury absence of Hugo Ekitike are understood to be higher on Liverpool’s agenda.
Liverpool have increasingly allowed key players to leave without collecting transfer fees in recent years. Roberto Firmino departed in 2023 despite former manager Jürgen Klopp publicly stating he wanted him to stay.
Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum also left as a free agent in 2021 after playing every Premier League match in his final season at the club.
Others including Emre Can, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Naby Keïta, Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also exited Anfield without bringing in transfer income for the club.
