Ademola Lookman Ready For Arsenal Vs Atlético Champions League Semi-final
Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman says he is ready to make his mark at Atlético Madrid as they gear up for a UEFA Champions League semi-final clash with Arsenal.
The Spanish side booked their place in the last four after eliminating FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals, with Lookman scoring a decisive goal in the second leg to continue his strong European form.
Speaking ahead of the showdown, Lookman praised the scale of his new club and his early months in Madrid. He said: “Atleti is one of the biggest clubs in the world, with top players who play at a very, very high level.”
“The team is amazing, the team is amazing, so it’s a blessing to be here to help the team,” Lookman continued. “The work that’s happened over the last month together has been amazing. It’s been great.”
Since arriving in January, the Super Eagles attacker has registered seven goals and four assists. Although not always a guaranteed starter under manager Diego Simeone, he has already shown his quality on the European stage.
In 2024, Lookman hit a historic hat-trick for Atalanta BC in the UEFA Europa League final, becoming the first player since Pierino Prati in 1969 to score three times in a one-off European final.
The forward also confirmed he has recovered from injury and is available for the first leg at the Metropolitano. “I missed the last few matches, but now I feel much better,” he said after returning to full training.
The London-born Lookman admitted the tie carries extra meaning. “The first time I played against Arsenal was when I was a kid, with Charlton. Wednesday will be a special game,” he noted.
He expects a fierce game as Atlético chase a place in the final. Lookman said, “They are a very tough opponent, a top team, and we have to be ready to fight. It’s the Champions League semi-finals, and there are no easy opponents at this stage. It will be a very tough match.”
“For me, it’s emotional. I grew up in London. The first time was with Charlton, when I was a kid. Being from London, it’s a very special match. What I want is to win.”
