Chelsea Crisis Deepens As Rosenior Calls Brighton Defeat ‘Indefensible’
Head coach Liam Rosenior tore into his players after Chelsea slumped to a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, admitting the display was “indefensible” and “unacceptable”.
The travelling support made their feelings clear as soon as Chelsea fell behind. Chants rang out from the away end with the visitors barely threatening the hosts’ goalie. The performance only worsened as Brighton cruised to victory.
Chelsea have now lost five straight matches without scoring, their worst run in front of goal since 1912. They failed to register a shot on target until the 40th minute and looked fragile at the back throughout.
“It was unacceptable in every aspect of the game, unacceptable in our attitude. I keep coming out and defending the players,” said Rosenior.
“That’s indefensible, that performance tonight. The manner of the goals we conceded, the number of duels we lost, and the lack of intensity in the team. Something needs to change drastically right now.
“I think the players need to have a look in the mirror at what they put in. You can talk about tactics… tactics come after the basics. Having more courage to play, winning duels, winning headers, tackles, and conceding terrible goals. That was an unacceptable performance tonight.”
The defeat unfolded in front of co-owner Behdad Eghbali and senior club figures, increasing scrutiny on the head coach’s future.
Chelsea now sit seven points behind Liverpool in fifth place, having played a game more. Their Champions League hopes are fading fast and tension is growing around the club.
Attention turns to Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium against Leeds United.
