Boniface Nears Werder Bremen Return As Osimhen Steps Up Recovery
Head coach Daniel Thioune has welcomed the return of Victor Boniface to training, raising hopes the striker could play a part in Werder Bremen’s fight for Bundesliga survival before the season ends.
Boniface has been sidelined since December after suffering a knee injury that required surgery earlier this year. He had initially been ruled out for the rest of the campaign, but his recovery has accelerated in recent weeks.
“First of all, I’m happy to have met him. We had a long talk. He indicated that he wants to help us in our fight to stay in the league,” Thioune told the club’s official website.
“For me, that offers another option, but not for this weekend. In the coming weeks, we’re playing against teams of similar strength, and if we can give Victor a few minutes of playing time, that could be a big help and a real asset for us.”
Boniface joined the Greens on loan from Bayer Leverkusen last summer and has registered two assists in 11 league appearances.
Boniface’s return to training drew praise from fellow Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who responded warmly to a social media post showing the forward working alone on the pitch.
After Boniface shared a training photo with the caption “God blessing”, Osimhen replied: “GOD is the greatest; star boy is back!”
Meanwhile, the Galatasaray striker is also edging closer to action following an arm injury sustained in last month’s UEFA Champions League defeat to Liverpool.
Osimhen underwent surgery in March and has stepped up rehabilitation. The club confirmed he has begun gym work under physiotherapists as part of his post-operative programme.
The 27-year-old is expected back before the end of the month, with Galatasaray set to face Trabzonspor in a crucial league clash this weekend.
