Presidency Takes Over Supervision Of Safety Investigation Bureau
The Presidency has removed the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) from the supervision of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and placed the agency under its direct oversight.
The decision was approved by President Bola Tinubu on March 5, 2026, and communicated to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for immediate implementation on March 11, 2026.
As part of the directive, the Attorney-General of the Federation was instructed to amend the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau Establishment Act 2022 to reflect the new administrative arrangement.
The Presidency also directed that the proposed amendments be forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative approval.
The NSIB was established through Act No. 35 of 2022, replacing the former Accident Investigation Bureau, which previously handled accident investigations only within the aviation sector.
Unlike the AIB, the NSIB has a broader mandate covering accident investigations across multiple modes of transportation.
Its jurisdiction includes incidents involving air, marine, rail and tracked vehicle systems, making it Nigeria’s only multimodal accident investigation authority.
Following the removal of the NSIB from its supervision, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development now oversees five agencies.
They are the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.
