Super Eagles Ready Despite Uncertainty Over 2026 World Cup Play-Off, Wilfred Ndidi Says
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has insisted that the team will remain ready to represent Nigeria with pride as they await a verdict that could significantly impact their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico suffered a blow last November after the Super Eagles lost 4-3 on penalties to the DR Congo in the African playoff final.
A fresh twist followed when the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) petitioned FIFA over the eligibility of some Congolese players, alleging an improper switch of nationality. The complaint has been under review since December 2025, but no ruling has been issued with just 20 days left before the intercontinental play-off in Mexico.
Despite the uncertainty, Wilfred Ndidi said the players are keeping their focus on football.
“To be honest, I don’t really focus on things I cannot control. We just concentrate on our football and prepare ourselves the best way possible,” the Super Eagles captain told Punch.
“Of course, everyone wants clarity, but we trust the Nigeria Football Federation and the authorities to handle everything properly.
“As players, our job is to stay ready, stay united, and keep working hard. Nigerian fans always expect the best from us, and we respect that. Whatever the outcome, we will continue to give everything for the country and make Nigeria proud.”
The intercontinental play-off will run from March 26 to March 31 in Guadalajara and Monterrey in Mexico. Six nations will battle for the final two slots at the expanded global tournament.
DR Congo have been paired with the winner of Jamaica versus New Caledonia, though a ruling in Nigeria’s favour could force changes to the fixture list.
Meanwhile, the NFF has scheduled a four-nation tournament for the Eagles during the March international window. Nigeria are expected to face Iran on March 27 before meeting Jordan on March 31 in Amman.
There is still doubt over whether the games will go ahead due to rising tensions in the Middle East.
