Lewandowski Chases 90th Poland Goal Against Super Eagles Of Nigeria Tonight
Poland captain Robert Lewandowski will have more than victory on his mind when the White-Reds take on Nigeria’s Super Eagles in an international friendly at the Stadion PGE Narodowy in Warsaw later tonight, June 3.
The veteran striker heads into the match on 89 goals from 166 appearances for Poland and stands one strike away from becoming only the second European men’s international player to reach 90 goals for his country.
A goal against Nigeria would further strengthen his position as Poland’s all-time leading scorer and move him a step closer to the coveted 100-goal mark.
Lewandowski, who made his international debut on September 10, 2008, is expected to start against the Super Eagles at 7:45 p.m. tonight after featuring for only the first half in Poland’s 2-0 defeat to Ukraine in their previous outing.
Poland manager Jan Urban has already indicated that changes are on the way as he continues to assess his squad ahead of future assignments.
Speaking ahead of the game, Urban said, “Expect numerous changes. There were many in the first match, and there will be many in the second. These are friendly matches, so when, if not now, should we try different things and give the players a chance?
“We made nine changes during the match against Ukraine. I watched other teams in friendly matches; they made 10 or 11 changes. That’s normal in such matches.”
The coach confirmed that Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara will replace Marcin Bułka in goal, while Piotr Zieliński is also set to return to the starting line-up.
Wednesday’s fixture will mark only the second senior international meeting between Poland and Nigeria.
Their previous encounter came in March 2018 during preparations for the FIFA World Cup in Russia. On that occasion, Nigeria claimed a memorable 1-0 win in Wrocław, with Victor Moses converting the decisive goal to hand the hosts their defeat.
Eight years later, the Super Eagles return to Polish soil looking to maintain their perfect record against the European side.
