Tottenham Open Talks With Liverpool Over Andy Robertson Deal
Tottenham Hotspur have opened discussions with Liverpool as they explore a move for left-back Andy Robertson ahead of the summer window.
Andy Robertson, a 31-year-old Scotland international is approaching the final months of his contract at Anfield and admitted last week that he remains undecided about his future. With the World Cup on the horizon, Robertson is keen to secure regular football after a season of limited starts.
BBC Sport understands Spurs have made an initial approach to Liverpool, although negotiations are still at an early stage and no agreement has been reached.
Robertson has found game time harder to come by this season, starting only four Premier League matches. His most recent outing came from the bench in the 1-1 draw against Burnley on 17 January.
Speaking before that match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot described Robertson as having been “important” to the club and praised the way he has responded to losing his starting place to summer signing Milos Kerkez.
Liverpool signed Robertson from Hull City for £8m in 2017 during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure. He has since gone on to make 363 appearances for the Reds, becoming a key figure during one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.
Should Robertson depart, Hungary international Kerkez would be Slot’s only senior specialist left-back. Liverpool could look to bolster their options by recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.
Tottenham, meanwhile, added Brazilian left-back Souza to their squad on Thursday and already have depth in that position. Destiny Udogie has been Thomas Frank’s first choice this season, with Djed Spence providing cover.
Ben Davies had also been in the frame, but the Wales international suffered a broken ankle on Sunday and has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.
A move for Robertson would represent a clear shift in profile for Spurs, who boast one of the youngest squads in the Premier League. Davies, 32, is currently the only member of the squad over the age of 30.
During his time at Liverpool, Robertson has won nine major honours, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League, cementing his reputation as one of the most consistent left-backs of his era.
