James Milner Retires From Football With Premier League Record
Former England international James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football, ending a remarkable career that spanned more than two decades at the highest level of the game.
James Milner, 40, leaves the sport after his contract with Brighton & Hove Albion expired, closing the chapter on one of the longest and most consistent careers in Premier League history.
Milner departs as the league’s all-time appearance holder, a record he achieved earlier this year.
His professional journey began at Leeds United before spells with Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton.
Over the course of his Premier League career, he made more than 600 appearances and earned a reputation as one of the competition’s most dependable and versatile players.
Success followed him wherever he went. At Manchester City, Milner won two Premier League titles before moving to Liverpool, where he added another league crown and lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2019.
Confirming his decision in a statement shared on his Instagram page on Monday, June 1, Milner reflected on the highs and lows of a career filled with memorable moments.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country at two European Championships and two World Cups,” he said.
“But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever.”
Milner also enjoyed a distinguished international career with England, featuring at two UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups.
