EPL: Michael Carrick Starts Manchester United Reign With Stunning Win Over Manchester City

Michael Carrick could hardly have asked for a better opening night as Manchester United boss after watching his side deliver a composed and ruthless 2-0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Naija News reported that United confirmed on Tuesday that Carrick would remain in charge until the end of the season following Ruben Amorim’s departure.

The announcement drew mixed reactions across the football world, but the former midfielder wasted little time in making his mark with a derby win that reignited belief among the Old Trafford faithful.

Against a City side known for controlling matches through possession, United adopted a disciplined approach, soaking up pressure before striking with precision. Although the visitors dominated the ball, Carrick’s men were sharper where it mattered most.

The first half ended goalless, though it was far from dull. United had two goals chalked off, while referee Anthony Taylor stayed busy with a flurry of yellow cards, including bookings for Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot. City’s Rodri also went into the book just before the interval as tempers simmered.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 65th minute. Bruno Fernandes slipped a clever pass into the path of Bryan Mbeumo, who kept his composure to fire past the goalkeeper and send the home crowd into celebration. It was a goal that reflected United’s game plan, patient in build-up and decisive in the final third.

City attempted to respond, with Pep Guardiola turning to his bench and withdrawing Erling Haaland, who cut a frustrated figure as he made way. Yet United remained in control and doubled their advantage 11 minutes later. Patrick Dorgu surged forward from defence and finished confidently after being picked out by Matheus Cunha to make it 2-0.

Carrick used the closing stages to manage the game, introducing Mason Mount and Ayden Heaven as United shut down any late threat. City, despite enjoying 68 per cent possession, failed to register a single shot on target, highlighting the effectiveness of United’s defensive display.

The win lifts Manchester United into the top four and provides an early statement of intent under their interim manager.
