Tinubu Hails Super Eagles After AFCON Quarter-Final Win Over Algeria
President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Eagles following their impressive 2–0 victory over the Algerian national football team in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.
Nigeria secured a place in the semi-finals with a commanding second-half display at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, bringing an end to Algeria’s impressive defensive run in the tournament.
Before the encounter, the Desert Foxes had conceded just one goal in the competition, but they were undone by Nigeria’s intensity, organisation and clinical finishing after the break.
Reacting shortly after the final whistle, President Tinubu took to his verified 𝕏 handle to applaud the team’s performance.
“Brilliant performance… inspiring. Go, Super Eagles! You have the support of all Nigerians,” the President wrote, adding the hashtags #Naija4TheWin and #AFCON2025.
After a goalless first half, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 47th minute when Victor Osimhen rose highest to head home a cross from Bruno Onyemaechi.
The Super Eagles doubled their advantage 10 minutes later as Akor Adams finished calmly after a fine assist from Osimhen, following a clever build-up involving Alex Iwobi.
Nigeria dominated proceedings, creating several chances and pinning Algeria back for long spells. The North Africans struggled to cope with the pressure and failed to register a single shot on target throughout the match.
Late substitutions, including the introduction of Moses Simon, helped Nigeria see out the closing stages comfortably.
Speaking after the match, Osimhen expressed gratitude to Nigerian supporters around the world.
He said, “Hello to the Super Eagles fans. Thank you so much for your support worldwide.
“This victory was not easy, and I’m happy that the team got the win against Algeria. Thank you for your support. We will continue to build on this momentum and hopefully get to the final and win it.”
