Odion Ighalo Impressed By Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman At AFCON 2025
Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has singled out Alex Iwobi as Nigeria’s standout performer in the emphatic 4-0 win over Mozambique on Monday night, even while applauding Ademola Lookman’s impressive run at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
Naija News reports that the Super Eagles of Nigeria cruised past the Mambas with a dominant display, and Ighalo, speaking as a pundit on SuperSport, said the midfield performance of Alex Iwobi was the defining feature of the match.
While Ighalo acknowledged that Ademola Lookman has been one of the tournament’s most consistent performers, he was clear about who caught his eye against Mozambique.
“Today I give it to Alex Iwobi because he engineered the midfield,” Ighalo said.
Iwobi, who plays his club football with Fulham, produced a commanding display, registering three secondary assists and dictating the tempo as Nigeria overwhelmed their southern African opponents.
Lookman, however, continues to enjoy a remarkable tournament. The Atalanta forward has now been involved in seven goals at the competition, more than any other player so far. Alongside Brahim Díaz and Mohamed Salah, he has scored in every match he has featured in at the AFCON 2025.
Against Mozambique, Lookman scored once and created two clear chances for his teammates. The performance earned him yet another Player of the Match award, adding to the growing list of individual honours he has collected during the tournament.
Ighalo, who finished as top scorer at the 2019 AFCON, said Lookman’s impact on the national team has been evident for some time.
“I like the way he positions himself when the ball is on his side,” he said.
“If he’s not running along the wing to pass the ball, he’s always in the box and near the goal.
“When the opportunity comes, he always grabs it, and that’s one thing I really like about him. He’s one of the best players on that team.”
The three-time champions of the continent, now turn their attention to a quarter-final clash against Algeria at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
