Pedro Neto Backs Portugal For World Cup Success After Beating Nigeria
Portugal winger Pedro Neto says the national team can look ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with confidence after defeating Nigeria 2-1 in an international friendly on Wednesday night.
Roberto Martinez’s side produced another encouraging display at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, extending their winning run following an earlier victory over Chile.
Naija News reports that Neto gave Portugal the lead in the 23rd minute, ending a four-month wait for a goal for club and country. Nigeria responded before the interval when Sevilla forward Akor Adams drew the Super Eagles level.
The hosts regained control in the second half and were rewarded 15 minutes from time when substitute Francisco Conceição fired home the winner.
Speaking after the match, Neto said Portugal’s recent results have strengthened belief within the squad ahead of football’s biggest tournament.
“We come away with good feelings, two games, two wins. That’s what we wanted. We dealt with our processes, things to improve. We are focused on what’s coming to make the dream come true. God willing, we will succeed,” Neto was quoted by O Jogo.
The Chelsea winger also stressed the importance of the recent friendlies in helping the squad adapt to Martinez’s ideas.
“Without a doubt. These games serve to assimilate ideas. In the Mexico training camp, some players were missing; we hadn’t been together for a long time. But we will be prepared,” he said.
Neto was equally pleased to have played a decisive role in the victory, scoring with a composed finish after being picked out by Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot.
“I found myself in an area that isn’t my favorite, but it has to be that way. I’m very happy to help the team,” added Neto.
Portugal will now turn their attention to final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Martinez’s side aiming to build on a pair of positive performances against Chile and Nigeria.
