John Terry Laments Nigeria’s Absence From 2026 FIFA World Cup
Former England captain John Terry has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the Super Eagles’ absence as a significant loss for the tournament.
Speaking during a virtual roundtable session organised by SuperSport, Terry said a World Cup without Nigeria lacks some of the excitement and football tradition the country has consistently brought to the global stage.
The former Chelsea defender noted that Nigeria’s rich football history, talented players and passionate supporters have always added colour to major international competitions.
“Nigeria will be a big miss. This is a World Cup for participants who haven’t had the opportunity to play in the tournament,” he said.
“I would have loved to see a top team like Nigeria there because they’ve got some great individuals. They’re a great nation. So, yeah, they fall under that category for me.
“I think they are a big miss because Nigeria probably would have gone further in the competition, but unfortunately, one side’s loss is another’s gain.
“I know Mikel Obi is very upset that they’re not there. It means he can’t do more commentating on the World Cup. That’s why he was upset.”
Terry’s remarks came as the 2026 FIFA World Cup got underway later tonight, with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa in the opening Group A fixture.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles of Nigeria wrapped up their international window with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in a friendly match.
Pedro Neto opened the scoring for the hosts before Akor Adams levelled for the Super Eagles.
Portugal restored their lead through substitute Francisco Conceição, who curled a superb effort into the far corner to seal victory.
