Argentina Stay Top As Nigeria Hold 26th Spot In Latest FIFA Rankings

World champions Argentina have retained their place at the top of the latest FIFA world rankings released on Thursday, reinforcing their status as favourites ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Albiceleste remain the highest-ranked side in world football after a strong run of results in recent international matches.

Spain stayed second in the rankings following a draw and a victory in their latest fixtures, while France dropped to third after suffering a defeat before responding with wins in subsequent games.

England occupy fourth position, with Portugal completing the top five. Brazil are sixth.

Nigeria remain 26th in the world despite a mixed set of results during the latest ranking period.

The Super Eagles enjoyed a successful campaign at the Unity Cup in London, securing victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica. However, they were later held to a 2-2 draw by Poland before losing 2-1 to Portugal in an international friendly.

Morocco continue to lead the way for Africa, climbing to seventh in the global standings and maintaining their position as the continent’s highest-ranked nation.

The latest rankings arrive as focus increasingly turns to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada from 8 p.m. tonight, June 11. The competition will feature 48 teams for the first time, making it the largest tournament in FIFA history.
