Barcelona’s Gavi To Undergo Surgery, Fermín López Ruled Out

Barcelona’s midfield depth has taken a serious hit after the club confirmed fresh injuries to Gavi and Fermín López.

Gavi and Fermín are now set for time on the sidelines, dealing Xavi Hernández an unwanted headache at a crucial stage of the season.

The big blow is to Gavi, whose recovery from a right knee injury has not gone according to plan. After weeks of conservative treatment, the 20-year-old midfielder underwent a high-intensity fitness test this week, but the results were not positive.

Barcelona later announced: “Based on the test conclusions, to ensure the best recovery effect and return to competitive condition, Gavi will undergo arthroscopic surgery tomorrow, with the club’s Medical Services Centre overseeing the entire process. A new medical report will be released after the surgery.”

Gavi has not featured since the league clash with Levante on August 24, meaning he has already missed a month of action.

According to Spanish journalist Alfredo Martínez from Cadena SER, he will now be sidelined for at least another four weeks once the surgery is complete. That would push his absence to nearly two months, depriving Barça of one of their most dynamic midfielders during a demanding schedule.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Catalan giants also lost Fermín López to injury. The 21-year-old came on as a substitute in the 3-0 victory over Getafe but was seen clutching his groin after the final whistle. Medical staff had to attend to him immediately, even shielding cameras from filming the scene.

The club later confirmed the setback: “Player Fermín López has suffered a left iliopsoas muscle injury and is expected to be out for about three weeks.”
