Barcelona Sign Gordon From Newcastle In €80 Million Deal
Barcelona have confirmed the signing of England winger, Anthony Gordon, from Newcastle United in a deal that could rise to €80 million.
Naija News reports that the Spanish champions announced the transfer on Friday, saying the 25-year-old had signed a five-year contract with the club.
Gordon will remain at Barcelona until June 30, 2031. Speaking after the move, Gordon described the transfer as a childhood dream.
He said, “As a kid, to play for Barcelona is the biggest dream possible, it’s the biggest club on the planet.
“I know it comes with a lot of responsibility, but like I said, I’m ready for this kind of challenge, ready for that responsibility.
“I know everybody, the players in the past who’ve worn the shirt, it holds a lot of weight, but I’m ready. I’m excited for the challenge.”
Gordon scored 17 goals for Newcastle this season, including 10 in the Champions League, and finished as the club’s top scorer.
The England international, who is part of the country’s World Cup squad, joins a Barcelona attack set for changes.
Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski, is leaving at the end of his contract, while Marcus Rashford’s future remains uncertain after his loan spell from Manchester United.
Barcelona are still hoping to strengthen its squad in the coming weeks.
Atletico Madrid striker, Julian Alvarez, has been linked with a move to Catalonia, while the club have not ruled out making a fresh move to retain Rashford.
After three years of reduced spending and the reopening of their partially rebuilt Camp Nou, Barcelona now have more room under La Liga’s financial fair play rules.
Lewandowski’s exit and the end of Rashford’s loan are expected to give the club more space to spend. Other players, including Roony Bardghji, Ansu Fati and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, may also leave.
Gordon’s transfer is Newcastle’s second biggest sale, behind Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool last summer for £125m.
Reports suggest Newcastle could move for Real Betis winger, Ez Abde, as a possible replacement. Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton in 2023 for £45m.
Everton is expected to receive 15 per cent of the profit from his move away from St James’ Park.
