Djokovic Wins Seventh ATP Finals Title - Match Review

Novak Djokovic‘s seventh ATP Finals title, achieved on November 19, 2023, was a testament to his enduring dominance in men’s tennis. The Serbian professional tennis player, currently ranked world No. 1, defeated home favourite Jannik Sinner in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) to secure his record-breaking victory in the prestigious season-ending tournament.

Naija News reports that Djokovic’s triumph in Turin marked his fourth consecutive ATP Finals title, extending his streak that began in 2020. His overall tally of seven ATP Finals titles surpassed that of legendary players Roger Federer and Pete Sampras, who have six titles to their names.

The 2023 ATP Finals victory was a culmination of a remarkable year for Djokovic. He had already claimed three Grand Slam titles in 2023, winning the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open. This achievement made him the first male tennis player to simultaneously hold all four Grand Slam singles titles since Rod Laver in 1969.

Djokovic’s victory in the ATP Finals further cemented his position as one of the greatest tennis players ever. He now holds the record for most Grand Slam singles titles (24) and most weeks at No. 1 in the ATP rankings (373). His unwavering dedication, exceptional athleticism, and tactical brilliance have made him a force to be reckoned with in tennis.

Match Review:

Djokovic asserted his dominance early on in the match by breaking Sinner’s serve in the fourth game, seizing the first opportunity that came his way. He then comfortably served out the opening set, leaving no room for doubt.

Such was Djokovic’s command over the game that he managed to silence the partisan crowd, which had been lively and enthusiastic throughout Sinner’s previous matches. At the beginning of the second set, Djokovic once again broke serve, further solidifying his control.

From the final game of the first set to the third game of the second set, Djokovic impressively won 14 consecutive points. However, Sinner managed to win the third game of the second set, holding his serve and displaying resilience.

Initially, it seemed like Sinner would be easily defeated, but he showcased immense determination and earned the crowd’s admiration when he held his serve in the seventh game. This intense 15-minute battle saw Djokovic with two break points, but Sinner stayed at 4-3.

Despite Sinner’s valiant efforts, he ultimately couldn’t keep up with Djokovic and disappointingly lost the match due to a double fault.

In a separate event, Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury successfully defended their ATP Finals doubles title by securing a convincing 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.

Ram and Salisbury maintained their unbeaten record in Turin, winning all five matches and solidifying their status as the US Open champions.

Their triumph in the season-ending tournament extended their winning streak to 10 matches, as they had also emerged victorious in last year’s edition without a single defeat.

Unfortunately for Granollers and Zeballos, the straight-sets loss prevented them from claiming the top spot in the year-end world rankings. Instead, Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek, their opponents from the Green Group who were eliminated, retained their position at the summit.
