Barcelona midfielder Gavi may be sidelined for the rest of the 2023-2024 season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Spain during the November international break.

Gavi who sobbed as he exited the field after making a huge stumble on Sunday while leaping to control the ball, is expected to undergo surgery to treat the injury.

Barca announced earlier today, November 20, that more information about the injury should be available in “the coming days” and confirmed that the right ACL of the 19-year-old will be operated upon.

If Gavi is sidelined for the rest of the season as it is being anticipated, the midfielder will lose the opportunity of playing for Spain in the 2024 Paris Olympics as well as the 2024 European Champion.

The recovery period may require eight to ten months, according to Barcelona, which formally confirmed the “complete tear of the ACL” earlier today.

Gavi has made 111 appearances for FC Barcelona since he made his senior debut at the club in 2021. In those games, he dished out twelve assists and scored seven goals in all competitions. In his 27 appearances for Spain, he has recorded five goals despite playing as a midfieder.

He helped Barca win the Spanish Super Cup and the league the previous season.

Spain’s manager Luis de la Fuente described Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Georgia in Valladolid as the “most bitter victory I have experienced in my life” due to Gavi’s injury sustained after just 26 minutes of the game.
