A former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has reacted to his sack from the Senate by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja.

Recall that the appellate court, on Wednesday, in a unanimous decision by a three-member panel of Justices, said it was satisfied that Suswam was not the valid winner of the Benue North East senatorial election held on February 25.

The appeal court faulted the judgement of the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, which returned Suswam of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Senate and nullified the election victory of Emmanuel Udende of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting to the court ruling in an interview on Arise News on Thursday, Susawam said he does not blame the judges of the appeal court for his sack but the electoral system.

The former Senator stated that election petitions should be handled better than they are currently being dealt with by various tribunals across the country.

Suswam asserted that there are different interpretations of the same section by different panels, which shows that the judiciary needs cleaning up.

The former Benue governor opined that if the tribunals continue to give conflicting results, it will further erode the confidence of the people in the judiciary.

He said: “Election petitions should be handled better than they currently are. There are different interpretations of the same section by different panels, which shows that the judiciary needs cleaning up. If these conflicting results continue as in my case, it will further erode confidence in the judiciary.”
