The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has condemned the arrest and alleged torture of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Imo State.

In a statement on Thursday released via his official X handle, Obi stated that the alleged brutalisation of the NLC President came as a rude shock to most Nigerians, saying that the incident says a lot about the state of affairs in the country.

The former Governor of Anambra State said the alleged attack on Ajaero shows the level of lawlessness, impunity, criminality, and rascality that have engulfed the country.

Obi stated that such an incident should worry any discerning mind because it runs counter to the type of country that Nigerians desire and deserve.

The LP flagbearer noted that abuse of power and the reckless violation of citizens’ rights through acts of impunity will have no place in the New Nigeria of his dreams.

Naija News recalls that NLC, on Wednesday, had organized a protest rally in Owerri, over the alleged insensitivity of the state government over the worker’s plight in the state.

Moments before the commencement of the protest, some thugs attacked him and inflicted body injuries on him alongside some union leaders. After the attack, police operatives whisked him away to their facility and reportedly put him in protective custody.

The leadership of the NLC had accused the Imo government of being behind the attack, which it claimed was supervised by the state Commissioner of Police.

However, the Imo government has denied being responsible for the arrest and attack on the NLC President.
