Nigerian defender, Bruno Onyemaechi, could be one of the Super Eagles players who might not be available for this month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Bruno Onyemaechi sustained a muscle injury while participating in a training session of his Portuguese club, Boavista.

Recall that Onyemaechi missed Boavista’s 2-0 league loss to Sporting Lisbon on Monday due to a muscular ailment. How well he recovers in time for their Sunday matchup against Rio Ave would determine if he would be available for the Super Eagles this November or not.

Recall that Onyemaechi played in all the last three 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers of the Super Eagles which were hosted in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state. He also played in the friendly games against Mozambique and Saudi Arabia in October.

Except for the AFCON qualifier against Sierra Leone, Onyemaechi has been called up for every Eagles game since November 2022.

Just as he is an important player for the Super Eagles, the 24-year-old defender is an essential part of Boavista’s squad, having started seven of the team’s nine league games so far this season.

Aside from Bruno Onyemaechi, the Super Eagles will be without their talisman, Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, Samuel Chukwueze, and Zaidu Sanusi due to different degrees of injuries.

Even though Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, has resumed training at Nottingham Forest, he is still very doubtful for the two qualification games.
