Many Killed, Others Injured As Correctional Service Vehicle Break Fails In Ilorin (Photos)

A vehicle of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) conveying some inmates from the prison facility in Okekura, Ilorin, the Kwara State capital was involved in a fatal accident on Thursday.

Naija News gathered the brake of the vehicle failed, leading to the accident in the Oja-oba area of Ilorin.

According to eyewitness reports, not less than four persons died in the accident while many others were also injured.

Pictures uploaded on social media by a resident identified as Idris AbdulGaniy Yinka, show the NCoS vehicle was hugely damaged, with its windows and rear windshield visibly broken.

Alongside the pictures, he wrote: “This morning at Isale-oja, Ilorin, Nigerian Correctional Service vehicle involved in accident. Four reportedly dead, other injured. The place is crowd and scary for now. I am seriously scared to take pictures. The attached pictures were taken on Facebook.

“I was there not told, I just left the place for my program at GRA Area, Ilorin.

“May Allah forgive all the victims.”

It was further gathered tha as a result of the accident, the people in the area began a protest during which one of the vehicles in the convoy was vandalised while the inmates in the vehicle were quickly evacuated by the police and kept at the police station ‘C’ division, Oja Oba, for safety.

No Casualty

Speaking on the incident, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Frederick Ade Ogidan, while confirming the incident, however, said no life was lost.

He added that the victims were critically injured and were receiving treatment in the hospital.

“The incident happened this morning at a roundabout in the Oja Oba area when one of the vehicles of the Federal Correctional Service and some Motorcyclists collided. Four people were involved and were seriously injured and have been taken to the hospital for treatment, none of them has died as I’m speaking now. They are being treated in the hospital and they are responding to treatment.

“The accident was caused by over-speeding and refusal by some road users to give those who are on emergency the right to pass,” Ogidan stated.

The spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, Ajayi Okasanmi, also confirmed that normalcy has returned to the area after the accident.

He said, “Two out of the six people have been treated and discharged from the hospital while four are still recovering.”
