Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Wednesday 18th October 2023.

The PUNCH: Organised Labour has issued a two-week deadline to governors to commence negotiations on the N35,000 wage award for workers in their states in line with the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Federal Government, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.

The Guardian: Outcomes of the last general elections and unprecedented flurry of election petitions have heightened credibility doubts of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) ability to conduct a free, fair and credible election. Although the trend of ‘election by court order’ has continued since the return of civil rule in 1999, disputed election outcomes waiting for judicial resolution in this year’s polls are alarming.

The Nation: The 84 million Nigerians living in poverty is unacceptable to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, said yesterday. The situation makes ending poverty a priority for the Administration, he added.

Daily Trust: President Joe Biden of the United States is due to arrive in Israel today. The world waits with bated breath to see how Biden’s arrival today might help de-escalate the ongoing Israel-Hamas war from a broader regional conflagration. But the New York Times has described his visit as “an extraordinary” show of support and “solidarity with America’s closest ally in the Middle East, in a wartime trip to bolster the country’s resolve to eradicate Hamas but also to urge limits on what seems bound to be a casualty-filled ground invasion of the Gaza Strip”.

Thank you for reading, that is all for today, see you again tomorrow for a review of Nigerian newspapers.
