Former Super Eagles captain and coach Austin Eguavoen has urged the Super Eagles players to do their job by winning the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) which Nigerians have been “craving” for.

Austin Eguavoen led the Super Eagles to the last edition of the tournament which was held in Cameroon. After a very promising start in the group stage, they failed to go past Tunisia in the knockout stage.

After the disappointing outing, Eguavoen returned to his technical director role while the Nigeria Football Federation brought in Jose Pasiero.

Pasiero like many other Super Eagles head coaches in the past, is expected to help Nigeria win the AFCON for the first time in ten years.

Recall that the last time the Super Eagles won the tournament was in 2013 in South Africa under the tutelage of late coach Stephen Keshi.

For the first time in a long while, the Super Eagles qualified for the 2023 AFCON with ease and without unnecessary permutations. Hence, football enthusiasts in Nigeria are expecting the Super Eagles to take the same form to the tournament proper in Ivory Coast from January 13.

In an interview with Brila FM, Austin Eguavoen stressed that Nigeria has all it takes to win the 2023 AFCON as he called on all stakeholders to support the team ahead of the competition.

He said, “We have been craving to try to get the Nations Cup back, since 2013 we’ve not been able to achieve that feat because we know we have the capacity, we have the quality and everything to be able to win it.

“But to say it is easy to achieve it is another thing, so everybody has to work towards the same goal, support the team whichever way we can, support the coaches and the players have to go out there and do the job.”
