FC Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, is hoping that the club could make Dutch midfielder, Frenkie de Jong extend his contract.

Frenkie de Jong has been playing for FC Barcelona since he joined the club from Ajax on July 1, 2019, for a transfer fee worth €86 million.

Since then, the 26-year-old Dutch midfielder has played 190 times for FC Barcelona in all competitions in which he scored 16 goals and provided 21 assists.

So far this season, the Netherlands international has scored a goal in 7 games in all competitions for FC Barcelona.

In the last two seasons, there have been a series of speculations concerning his future. Frenkie de Jong was so close to joining Manchester United in the last two seasons but the deal collapsed after a series of back-and-forths.

Deco who was just named sporting director at FC Barcelona, has stressed that the Spanish giants are aiming to extend his contract which will expire on June 30, 2026.

“I see Frenkie de Jong enjoying his life at Barça”, Barca director Deco told MD as quoted by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“He’s happy here, he’s playing top-level football and he feels very good — at the end, it’s always the player deciding”.

“He’s under contract until 2026 and we want him to stay for a long time”.

He added: “I’ve texted Frenkie de Jong’s agents to introduce myself. We haven’t touched on the new deal yet but we want him to stay at Barça for many years, it’s clear”.

“It’s the same for Frenkie, Pedri, Gavi, Araújo, Gündogan… that’s the plan”.
