The Super Eagles of Nigeria, have finally ended their 15-game unbeaten run in international friendlies by defeating Mozambique 3-2.
On Friday, October 13, the Super Eagles of Nigeria drew 2-2 with Saudi Arabia in Portugal to make it the 15th time in a row the Nigerian side failed to win a league game.
Following Friday’s 2-2 draw with Saudi Arabia, the Super Eagles have lost nine, and drawn six in their last 15 friendlies since defeating Egypt 1-0 in March 2019 thanks to an early goal from Paul Onuachu.
But that trend stopped earlier on Monday, October 16 when the Super Eagles took on Mozambique in their 16th friendly game in the last four years.
Even though the Eagles went into the game without injured Victor Osimhen and in-form Kelechi Iheanacho who is said to have personal issues to settle, the Nigerian side were able to hold their own against the determined Mozambique side.
In the thrilling encounter, Mozambique stunned Nigeria with the opening goal as early as in the 6th minute courtesy of a strike from Geny Catamo.
They enjoyed the lead until in the 19th minute when Terem Moffi who currently plays for OGC Nice scored the equaliser with a close-range shot.
At the half-hour mark, Nigeria took the lead for the first time in the game when Frank Onyeka scored from the edge of the 18-yard box.
To make things worse for Mozambique, the team’s Edmilson was shown a red card in the 38th minute.
Before the end of the first half, a Mozambique player committed a handball in the penalty box and the referee awarded a penalty to Nigeria which Simon Moses converted in injury time to make it 3-1 for the Super Eagles.
Despite playing with a man-down, Mozambique tried to stage a comeback in the second half but all they were able to get was just a goal in the 55th minute courtesy of a strike from Faisal Bangal. That forced the game to end in a 3-2 win in favour of Nigeria.
