The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Gusau, has announced that the country’s head coach, Jose Peseiro will be based in Nigeria permanently.

This has become necessary, according to the NFF president, because Jose Peseiro who is a Portuguese tactician is not just the head coach of the Super Eagles, but also the coach of the home-based Eagles (Super Eagles B).

Gusau has given Peseiro the mandate to qualify the home-based Eagles for the next African Nations Championship (CHAN) which is a tournament for players playing for clubs in their respective countries.

Gusau stated this in a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, October 3.

The NFF president said, “We expect that the Super Eagles B will also return to the Africa Nations Championship. For two consecutive CHAN tournaments, we were not there, that is why I said the Super Eagles coach would be in charge of the CHAN Eagles. And by the grace of God before the end of this month, he is coming to stay in Nigeria permanently so that he can be monitoring our league and get players he can use for the CHAN tournament”.

Recall that Jose Peseiro has already helped the Super Eagles qualify for the 2023 AFCON which will commence in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11.

Ahead of the tournament, the NFF reached a deal with the Portuguese tactician that led to the extension of his contract. He has been mandated to lead the Super Eagles to at least the semi-final stage of the competition.

Reports claimed that Peseiro had to accept a pay cut before he was offered the contract extension even though the new deal came with more responsibilities.
