Sadiq Umar Considering Super Eagles Retirement
Valencia striker Sadiq Umar has revealed he is weighing up his future with Nigeria and could retire from international football, though he insists no final decision has been made.
Speaking to Radio France International Hausa, the 28-year-old said he would take time to reflect before deciding whether to continue his Super Eagles career.
“I am contemplating retirement from the Nigerian national team, but I will finalise my decision when the new season starts,” he stated during the interview with Radio France International Hausa.
Umar’s comments come amid growing debate following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
While acknowledging the disappointment, the former Almeria forward avoided pointing fingers and instead urged attention to be directed towards the future.
“I cannot specifically identify the reason for our failure, but that is now in the past. We must concentrate on the next World Cup, which is four years away,” he remarked.
The striker also addressed questions about his absence from recent Super Eagles squads. Umar suggested the situation was simply a reflection of the intense competition for places within the national team.
“I was not selected. Perhaps my profile does not align with their needs, and other players are performing well in the team because, as you know, Nigeria is rich in talent,” he explained.
Nigeria’s depth in attacking positions has increased in recent years, making selection more competitive for forwards seeking regular involvement with the national side.
Asked whether age or motivation could influence his retirement plans, Umar said he would use the coming months to carefully assess what is best for his career and long-term future in football.
“I still have time to reach a conclusive decision on that matter. This is why I mentioned that I will wait for the commencement of the new season before making my choice, allowing me to contemplate what will aid me in concentrating on my career and sustaining my presence in football, similar to Cristiano Ronaldo.”
