Gabon: A Father And Son Ruling For 56 Years Is Not Democracy – Shehu Sani

A former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Shehu Sani has said that the system of government practiced in Gabon is not democracy.

Naija News reports that the coup in Gabon has been greeted with mixed reactions.

President Bola Tinubu has, however, condemned the coup, insisting that democracy and the rule of law must not perish in the African continent.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale said, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is watching developments in Gabon very closely with deep concern for the country’s sociopolitical stability and the seeming autocratic contagion apparently spreading across different regions of our beloved continent.

“The president, as a man who has made significant personal sacrifices in his own life, in the cause of advancing and defending democracy, has all of the unwavering belief that power belongs in the hands of Africa’s great people, and not in the barrel of a loaded gun.”

However, speaking via Twitter on Monday morning, Sani insisted that a father and son ruling for 56 years cannot be called democracy

According to him, “Gabon: I know what is called Military rule. I know what is called Democratic rule. I don’t know how to call a father and son ruling a country for 56 years as a democratic rule.”
