Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Thursday 24th August 2023.

The PUNCH: The fresh subsidy palliative loans may drive 36 states’ borrowing from the Federal Government to N1.34tn, according to findings by The PUNCH. The debt under the budget support facility of the Federal Government included a N614bn debt as of 2019, another debt of N656bn in 2021, and a fresh N69.12bn debt as subsidy palliative this year.


The Guardian: Despite gulping N101.744 billion in three years (2021 to 2023), the country’s space programme has failed to send an unmanned mission to space, a target it set for itself by 2022, with indications that it may also miss the plan of sending manned mission to space by 2030.


Vanguard: Algeria and Egypt have moved against military intervention in the Niger Republic, insisting that dialogue remains the best option out of the current political crisis in the country.


ThisDay: Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, yesterday, lashed out at the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying he was shocked and scared of the government’s inability to plan and effectively respond to the fuel subsidy removal that further impoverished Nigerians, inflicting hardship and suffering on the people.


The Nation: Weighed down by the rigours of investigation and the pangs of trial, the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has opted for plea bargain. It was learnt that as part of the out-of-court settlement terms, Emefiele will forfeit any illicit funds and questionable assets traced to him. But, it cold not be confirmed if any illicit fund has been linked to him.


Daily Trust: The alleged non-remittance of billions of naira, which Nigerian workers contributed to the National Housing Fund (NHF) generated ripples yesterday at a hearing by the House of Representatives ad hoc Committee. The ad-hoc committee of the House is probing alleged non-remittance and utilization of housing funds from 2011 till date.
