Former Everton and Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley has returned to the Premier League by joining newly promoted side, Luton Town on a free transfer.

Ross Barkley who has played 33 times and scored four goals for the Three Lions of England left OGC Nice at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

Since July, the 29-year-old out-of-favour England international who made 232 Premier League appearances for Everton, has been without a club. Hence, his move to Luton Town is seen as a huge boost to his career.

“Ross brings loads of experience at the top level, has international experience, and brings an X-factor,” the manager of Luton Town Rob Edwards said.

Ross Barkley has played for Everton, his boyhood club, Sheffield Wednesday on loan, Leeds United on loan, and then Chelsea. He was sent on loan to Aston Villa for a season while at the West London club.

In his last season at Chelsea (2021-2022), Barkley managed to play just six Premier League games.

He joined French Ligue 1 side, OGC Nice in 2022 in search of regular game time but only managed to play 27 league games for the club last season.

After completing his move to Luton Town earlier today, August 9, Ross Barkley said, “Why Luton? Going from the Conference to the Premier League is a great story and for me personally to be back in the Premier League, it’s great motivation.”

He added, “I’m still relatively young, and over the last couple of years I’ve not played as much as I’d have liked

“But I’ve reserved a lot of energy and looked after myself, so it’s great to be here now as I’ve got a lot to show but I’m ready and feeling motivated.”

Barkley is expected to make his debut for Luton on Saturday when the newly promoted side face Brighton.
