Fuel Subsidy Removal: NLC, TUC Planned Strike Highlights Plight Of Most Nigerians

In the wake of the latest notice by the organized labour of a nationwide strike starting from Wednesday, August 2, the federal government has called on the unions to reconsider their decision, assuring that it is doing all it can to meet their demands. The irony isn’t lost on Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu who wasted no time in declaring the end of fuel subsidy payment minutes after his inauguration into office is now pleading for more time and patience to address labour’s grievances with are hinged on the administration’s major policy shift that has since left Nigerians reeling from the fallouts.

Two days after the President removed the fuel subsidy, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced a new price regime for petrol ranging from N537 to N600 per litre from the N185 hitherto price. This instantly worsened the inflationary trend in the country which was already at over 20 percent at the time. The development got the Nigeria Labour Congress (NUC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) spoiling for a show with the government which quickly set up a Presidential Proposal Steering Committee to liaise with labour.

Fuel Subsidy: NLC, TUC Angrily Storm Out Of Meeting With FG

The leadership of the organised labour have allegedl stormed out of the meeting of the Presidential Steering Committee on subsidy palliatives that was scheduled to take place at the presidential villa, Abuja.

Recall that the Steering Committee meeting had met with the government delegation on Wednesday where the two parties agreed to reconvene on Friday to get brief from the three subcommittees set up to look into various demands.

The Steering Committee was set up by the government to come up with palliatives that would cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal on the workers.

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has declared an end to all forms of sit-st-home exercise in a handwritten letter.

Naija News reports that the IPOB leader, in a handwritten letter, which his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, read at a world press conference held in Enugu State on Friday, said all agitation protesting for his release should henceforth be stopped.

Kanu, in the written declaration dated July 24, 2023, was a sequel to the refusal of Simon Ekpa, a self-acclaimed disciple, to announce the cancellation and further declaration through his media platforms.

Buhari Reacts As Military Forces Take Over Power In Niger Republic

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger Republic by military forces.

Naija News reports that military juntas blocked the country’s presidential palace and seized power from President Bazoum on Wednesday.

In a series of tweets via his Twitter handle on Friday, Buhari said he and his family are shocked over the latest turn of events in Niger Republic.

Buhari said he is happy that the ECOWAS, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is already dealing effectively with the matter, and hope that the unwanted situation will be completely reversed.

Kidnapping Syndicate Operating In Ifako Area Of Lagos – Victim Shares Sad Experience

I knew I was in trouble the moment the driver wind up the glasses, and I was pushed to the ground, said a Nigerian lady, Bamidupe Eunice Modupe, who shared her awful experience with kidnappers when she boarded a vehicle in the Ifako area of Lagos.

In a recent interview with Naija News, Modupe revealed that she was kidnapped on Friday, June 16, 2023, after she boarded a vehicle on her way to her office.

The single mother narrated her painful experience, hoping that Nigerians can learn from the event, more importantly, so security authorities can act swiftly to apprehend the perpetrators so others would not suffer the same fate.

The kidnapping incident at Ifako became a thing of concern as more people, aside from Modupe, were said to have been kidnapped and tortured in the same manner as the latter who a ransom was paid for her release.

Sanwo-Olu Finally Sends Commissioner Nominees List To Lagos Assembly [Full List]

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has finally transmitted the list of his proposed Commissioners and Special Advisers nominees to the Lagos State House of Assembly for confirmation.

Naija News reports that the nominees list which was sent to the Assembly on Friday was made up of 39 names.

Sanwo-Olu’s spokesman, Gboyega Akosile, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

“Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu transmits list of proposed Cabinet members to the Lagos State House of Assembly for ratification,” Akosile tweeted.

“The list consists of 39 names with 30% women, youths, technocrats and politicians.”

NLC Mobilises NUPENG, PENGASSAN, NUEE, Others To Join Nationwide Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on all its affiliates across the country to join in the August 2 nationwide strike to protest the high cost of living in the country.

In a communique released at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday, the congress also appealed to various Civil Society Oganisations (CSOs) to join the planned protest.

According to the communique signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, the NLC insisted that there must be a reversal of policies by the federal government that have resulted in “mass sufferings and deprivation across the nation”.

The labour body said it would be left with no option but to commence an indefinite strike on Wednesday, August 2, if the federal government failed to meet its demands.

NASS: President Tinubu Gives Ministerial Nominees Deadline

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Sen. Abdullahi Gumel, has given ministerial nominees a deadline to complete their documentation.

Speaking to newsmen on Friday, Gumel said documentation for all the ministerial nominees has commenced.

He disclosed that all nominees were expected to visit the office of the SSA, located at AB 25, Basement, National Assembly complex, between July 28 and July 30.

Niger Coup: Tinubu To Host Special ECOWAS Meeting In Abuja

President Bola Tinubu will host a special meeting of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, on Sunday, July 30th in Abuja.

The Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, Dele Alake, made the disclosure in a statement on Friday.

Alake said the meeting is to discuss the coup in the Republic of Niger that has upended the constitutional political leadership in the West African country.

The details of the meeting between the United States Vice President, Kamala Harris, and President Bola Tinubu have emerged.

In a statement released by the presidential spokesman, Dele Alake, President Tinubu spoke with Harris about the strong ties between the Nigerian and American people.

Both leaders also talked about the two nations’ shared work on global and regional issues from defending democracy in West Africa and the Sahel to promoting digital inclusion and economic growth.
