Lawmakers Dismiss Rumours Of Discord Over Committee Assignments

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas in response to the establishment of standing committees has refuted rumours of internal strife.

During a press conference held in Abuja, the group of six, including the Speaker’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Chamberlain Dunkwu, dismissed the speculations.

Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere, speaking on behalf of the group, lauded the committee composition as equitable.

He emphasized the Speaker’s prioritization of member interests over his personal or financial gains.

According to Ugochinyere, the Speaker’s dedication to justice and fair representation satisfied all interest groups in the House.

He emphasized that the appointments were free from outside influence.

“Abbas has started living up to our expectations, so the majority of members of the 10th Assembly are commending his leadership style,” said Ugochinyere.

The spokesperson cited the committee assignments as evidence of the Speaker’s and Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu’s consideration for member interests.

He stressed that unity was the focus, with standing committee membership representing a range of interests, even including those who had challenged Abbas for the speakership.

Ugochinyere argued that the appointment of committee chairs illustrated the theme of unity within the House, with notable contenders for the speakership receiving significant roles.

Stating that “there is no winner and no vanquished,” Ugochinyere expressed optimism about the House’s ability to fulfil its mandate to the people.

He said that the beneficiaries and other members have committed to focusing on fulfilling their legislative responsibilities, stating, “And that is why you can see the unity and oneness in the house, we are now set for the full business of a parliament.”
