Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Shehu Sani has lamented over the effect of the resident doctors’ strike on the country.

Naija News recalls that the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) had declared an indefinite strike on Tuesday night.

NARD President, Dr Emeka Orji, said the decision was made during the July National Executive Council meeting in Lagos.

The doctors are demanding the implementation of the one-for-one replacement policy for healthcare workers; the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to discontinue the downgrading of the membership certificate issued by the West African Postgraduate Medical and Surgical Colleges; the immediate payment of all salary arrears; the implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure; a new hazard allowance; and the domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act; among others.

Reacting to the development via Twitter, Sani urged the Federal Government to reach an amicable agreement with the association.

He warned that the lives of patients are in danger and the government must not hesitate to step in.

Sani wrote, “The Doctors strike has virtually paralysed all public hospitals in the country. It came with a warning that was ignored. The lives of patients are in danger. The FG must urgently reach an amicable agreement with the leaders of the union in order to save lives.”
