Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Thursday 20th July 2023.

The PUNCH: Members of the organised private sector, on Wednesday, expressed fear over the possible shutdown of businesses and job losses following the hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited and fuel marketers.


The Guardian: The falling naira has sent a shockwave across the market, throwing many bank chiefs off guard. Whereas the majority of the financial institutions hold foreign currency assets and liabilities, the latter outweighs the former for many in the group. In some cases, findings suggested, liabilities are twice the value of assets.


ThisDay: President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kasshim Shettima yesterday met with President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio and some state governors as part of efforts to cushion the effects of the petrol subsidy removal on the population. The meeting was part of the President’s continued consultation with key players on how to get the economy on sound footing.


The Nation: Federal, state and local governments are set for a windfall from subsidy removal. They will receive the highest allocations today from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). After sharing a total of N3.62 trillion from January to May 2023, FAAC is about to share an all-time high of N1.959 trillion.


Daily Trust: A former governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has been tipped as the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Daily Trust reliably gathered last night. Ganduje, 73, was yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and three governors who are members of the APC
