President Tinubu: My Guinean Citizenship Became Invalid When My Passport Expired In 2020

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said that his Guinean Citizenship automatically became invalid when his passport, being paraded on the internet by Labour Party (LP), expired in 2020.

Naija News understands that Tinubu said this to the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal through his lead counsel, Wole Olanipekun (SAN) while asking the Tribunal to carpet the petition brought before it by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

It could be recalled in the build-up to the 2023 general election, Nigerian investigative journalist, David Hundeyin, shared a document on the internet which asserted that Tinubu holds Guinean citizenship.

Hundeyin received a series of backlash from members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who called his publication fake and doctored.

However, during the latest hearing on Peter Obi and the Labour Party’s petition challenging Tinubu’s emergence as winner of the February 25th presidential election, Olanipekun acknowledged that the 2023 APC presidential candidate had Guinean citizenship but that it expired in 2020 when his Guinean passport ‘being brandished’ by the opposition, expired.

According to Tinubu’s counsel, the President’s Guinean passport tendered before the court by the Labour Party as PW27 expired in 2020, adding that the opposition party’s claim on Tinubu’s dual citizenship is aimed at embarrassing the President.

“Lastly, the PW27 tendered Exhibit PBF4 (Guinean passport), which as usual, he claimed to have downloaded from the internet, purportedly representing the data pages of the respondent’s Guinean passport, which ex facie, shows that the passport expired in 2020. It is all a guesswork, aimed at embarrassing the respondent,” SaharaReporters quoted Tinubu’s legal counsel to have said at the Tribunal.
