Stop Stirring Up Nigerians Against INEC Boss - APP Tells Labour Party

The Action Peoples Party (APP) has said the call for the sack of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, by the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (LPPCC), is needless.

Recall that the Director General of the LP Presidential Campaign, Akin Osuntokun, called for the immediate dismissal and prosecution of the INEC chairman.

Osuntokun also asked the international community to take “punitive action” against Yakubu and other top officials of the electoral body over the conduct of the 2023 elections.

In a statement issued by its acting National Chairman, Uche Nnadi, the APP asked the LP to wait for the ruling of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal decision on the 2023 election before calling for the sack of Professor Yakubu.

Nnadi asserted that it is unfortunate that INEC has become an easily available punching bag for the political class to manipulate the system in their favour.

Therefore, he asked the LP to needlessly stop stirring up Nigerians against Yakubu, an outstanding public servant, because of their easily predicted loss at the election.

He said, “It is on record that the political class stood by while INEC facilities were targeted and attacked in the build-up to the elections. For instance, INEC facilities in the South East were constantly attacked & equipment destroyed with little or no comments from people such as Mr Osuntokun.

“We will be the first to admit that there were a few cases where politicians induced INEC staff to manipulate the process. However, it is on record that where these cases have been established, the Commission has demonstrated a commitment to prosecuting the perpetrators of these acts.
