From April 1, 2023, the integration and verification of National Identity Numbers (NIN) will cost Nigerians ₦1,000.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) reached this agreement with the aim of improving the standard, accuracy, and speed of passport services through prompt NIN verification.

In a statement that was made public on Monday and was signed by Kayode Adegoke, the head of corporate communications, the Commission stated that the new arrangement advances the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy’s directive to streamline the passport application, renewal and issuance processes.

As a result of this change, each application for a Nigerian passport would be subject to a NIN Verification fee. Hence, the commission announced that Nigerians must pay a charge of ₦1,000 for NIN integration and verification starting from April.

According to a statement from NIMC, each Nigerian who requests that their NIN be validated must pay ₦1,000, $3 for businesses in African nations, and N10.00 for businesses in other nations (or its international equivalent).

A new application process that has been agreed upon by the NIMC and NIS will considerably speed up passport issuance and re-issuance while reducing traffic at the NIS offices, the commission said.

The statement from NIMC read, “The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) wishes to inform the general public that it has devised and agreed on a framework with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) to significantly improve the quality of service, accuracy, and speed of passport services through the timely verification of the National Identification Number.

“This new arrangement is in furtherance of the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy’s directive to streamline passport application, renewal, and issuance processes.

“Consequently, a NIN Verification fee would be charged for each Nigerian passport application for this service.

“The NIN service, fees, and the new NIS process will go live on 1st April 2023.”
