Rivers Rep Member Found With Foreign Currency Dragged To Court, Refused Bail

A member of the House of Representatives for Port Harcourt City Local Government Constituency II, who was caught with foreign currency, Chinyere Igwe has been dragged to court.

Naija News reports that the police in the state on Wednesday arraigned Igwe before a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt for alleged money laundering.

The lawmaker, who was dragged to court on one count of money laundering pleaded not guilty.

Igwe, according to the charge sheet, was seen in possession of $498,000 on the 24th day of February 2023 without reporting to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Naija News reported on 24 February that the Rivers State police command confirmed the arrest of a member of the House of Representatives, Chinyere Igwe.

It was gathered that Igwe was arrested for allegedly having $500,000 US Dollars reportedly given to him by the presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

The spokesman of the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the lawmaker was arrested during a stop and search operation by operatives deployed to the Independent National Electoral Commission office along Aba Road in Port Harcourt.

However, at court on Wednesday, Igwe’s legal representative made an application for bail but the police raised some objections.

The trial Judge, Justice Stephen Daylop-Pam, after listening to the arguments and submissions adjourned till 14th of March, 2023 for bail consideration.

He also directed that the accused person be sent to Nigerian Police Clinic for attention on a medical report about his health.
