The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised the electorates in Enugu a hitch-free election despite pockets of violence across the state.

Naija News recalls that the senatorial candidate of the Labour Party in Enugu east Senatorial district, Oyibo Chukwu, was killed less than three days before the election.

Due to his demise, INEC announced on Friday that the senatorial election in the district has been postponed to March 11, the same date scheduled for governorship and state house of assembly elections.

Despite that huge setback, the INEC office in the state has announced that the resources needed for a hitch-free election have been distributed across the 17 local government areas ahead of Saturday’s presidential and national assembly elections.

According to Mr. Rex Achume, the head of the department in charge of voter education and publicity, 2,112,793 persons were registered to vote in the presidential and national assembly elections.

He also said that ”although there had been pockets of violence in some part of the state the security agencies have assured both the Commission and the voters that they would do all things possible to ensure peaceful polls.”

Also, “all observing kits for Party agents have been delivered to all the political parties and the observers have similarly picked up their tags for the activity,” according to Ms. Ginika Nwankwo, Director of Department, Election Party Monitoring and Observation.

Mrs. Nwankwo noted that security measures had been put in place in all local governments to guarantee a peaceful election.

She assured the voters that the security team had taken the necessary procedures to ensure their safety.
