Formula One icon, Fernando Alonso has affirmed his confidence in the Aston Martin team he joined recently as he hopes to achieve success with the team.

Aston Martin unveiled their 2023 model on Monday at a brand-new facility that will significantly improve their season run.

Alonso stated that he “thought there was a potential” for the team to win races and a third championship.

“I don’t think this year – I am honest on that,” he said.

“I cannot say to anyone we will be fighting for victories this year.

“But I want to have a good car to start with and maybe in the second part of the year, we can get closer if there is an opportunity, changeable conditions, something that when the opportunity comes we will not miss it.

“We have more possibilities to fight for wins and podiums next year if we have a good baseline this year.”

The two-time F1 champion, 41, who is starting his 20th season this year, continued: “This project is really large and has a lot of things it has to show. My time behind the wheel is short, but I will do all in my power to move the process along quickly and help the team as much as I can.”

The reform process started when Canadian businessman Lawrence Stroll bought the Aston Martin team in 2020, and he intends to carry it through to successful completion.

Since he bought the team, Stroll has acquired renowned professionals from elite teams, like the new technical director Dan Fallows from Red Bull and his deputy Eric Blandin from Mercedes.

These moves have virtually increased the number of personnel to close to 800, spent millions on a new facility that includes a wind tunnel, and more.

At the beginning of the previous season, Aston Martin had the second-slowest car, but by the end of the year, they had made enough progress to place just outside the top six in the constructors’ standings.

Due to his inspiration from the potential of Aston Martin, Alonso left Alpine at the end of last year. The Spaniard asserted that he “trusts this initiative” and had faith in Stroll’s abilities.

“I am very demanding in everything I do,” Alonso said. “I expect a lot from people I work with. I give my 100% and I expect the same from the people I work with.

“Since the first day in Aston Martin, I felt the same values as the people around me.

“We have the leadership of Lawrence, who had a lot of success in many different projects and I have no doubt F1 will not be any different. He will succeed sooner or later.

“The new people, Dan Fallows and Eric [Blandin], the best people in each of their competitors, Aston Martin went and convinced them to join. So there is something special going on in this team.”
