The leader of the pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Ayo Adebanjo, on Saturday said the term ‘Emi Lokan’ is an agreement between the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu and President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Adebanjo, he said the term, ‘Emi Lokan’ which translates to ‘My Turn’ does not mean it is the turn of the Yoruba to take over power in 2023.

Tinubu made the phrase while addressing party faithfuls in June 2022 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, before the APC presidential primary

Adebanjo’s recent comment makes him the second elder statesman of Yoruba extraction to criticise the phrase after former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The Afenifere leader while addressing supporters of the Labour Party at the party’s presidential campaign held at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), noted that Tinubu’s claim is an agreement between him and Buhari.

He said, “The one who said ‘it is my turn’ is his agreement with Buhari.”

Emilokan didn’t say it is the turn of the Yoruba. Emilokan’s agreement with Buhari was that when Buhari leaves office, he will take over. [But] were you there when he said that?,” he asked the crowd, to which they chorused, “No.”

Adebanjo stated that his support for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi is not merely about backing the former Anambra governor.

He said, “I said before that if Obi does not come in as the president, forget Nigeria.

“The northern elders now say I want to impose Obi on them. No! They want to impose a northerner on us, and we said no.”
