Manchester United have signed goalkeeper Jack Butland on loan from Crystal Palace to serve as a backup to the club’s first-choice goalkeeper David de Gea.

United had to offer Jack Butland a 6-month deal as an immediate solution after Newcastle United cut short the loan spell of Martin Dubravka at United ahead of the January transfer window.

Note that Butland who has been a Crystal Palace goalkeeper since 2020 has not made any appearance for Palace so far this season. Hence, the club allowed him to join United for the rest of the 2022-2023 season.

Also, note that Butland was a member of Gareth Southgate’s team at the 2018 World Cup. He made nine international appearances for England before he lost his place in the team.

So far in his goalkeeping career, the 29-year-old English goalkeeper has appeared in 87 Premier League games.

However, he has only made 10 league games for Palace and has not been a Premier League regular since Stoke City was relegated in 2018.

After sealing his loan move to Manchester United, Jack Butland said: “This is an amazing club and one that I am now proud to represent.

“I’ve played against David de Gea and represented England alongside Tom Heaton; they are top-class keepers, and I am relishing the opportunity to compete alongside and support them as team-mates.

“There is a lot that this group can achieve this season and I’m excited to play my part in helping everyone to reach these ambitions.”

While United football director John Murtough added: “Jack is an excellent goalkeeper with a great experience throughout his career. His mentality and personality will be a real asset to our superb group of goalkeepers and the whole squad.”
