I Was Never Convicted Of Corruption - Doyin Okupe

Mixed reactions have trailed the resignation of Doyin Okupe as the Director-General of the Labour party presidential campaign council.

Naija News earlier reported that Okupe stepped down from his position following the ruling of the Federal High Court Abuja on Monday convicting him of Money Laundering.

The LP chieftain was sentenced to a two-year jail term after he was found guilty of money laundering but was given the option of paying a fine which he did.

Okupe was earlier convicted by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu who considered a money laundering case brought before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on alleged money laundering and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N702 million valid.

Taking to his Twitter handle on Tuesday, Doyin shared a copy of his resignation letter written to the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi.

He further urged Obi to appoint a DG who is without any distractions to lead his campaign ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Following the development, some netizens have taken to social media to react to the resignation of the Director General of Obi/ Datti Presidential Campaign Council.

He doesn’t want any distractions. He genuinely loves Peter Obi. Doyin has stepped aside but Obidients will apply more pressure.”

@Yemi__Ajayi wrote: “Doyin Okupe resigns as the DG labour party presidential campaign. This is a serious embarrassment to Labour Party and Peter Obi’s candidacy. Nigerians know better now, we cannot vote for someone who appoints a criminal to direct the affairs of his Campaign. NEVER!

@VictorIsrael_ wrote: “Doyin Okupe resigns as the campaign DG. An act of class. Future of Nigerians over political ambitions. Obidients don’t be deceived, Peter Obi is the main target. They can’t find anything to pin him with. They came really late because this ship don already sail. Stay focused!

@drpenking wrote: “Doyin Okupe has resigned from the Peter Obi campaign team after being stained. Just one member of the team o. Honour! But your team? Your candidate himself is a drug baron and chef and everyone on the team are motor park touts. Spot the difference!!

@firstladyship wrote: “Doyin Okupe’s resignation is a big moral booster to Peter Obi & the Labour Party. Politicians don’t resign in Nigeria, they will rather die or chew wet jeans. The question now is, “when will Bola Tinubu step down & apologize for his drug dealings in the United States of America?
